Friday Flowers

My little experiments with my new DSLR, a Nikon D3100, is proving rather rewarding. Of late, though ,I haven’t been doing much outdoor photography. Too cold to stay still outside for long!! And believe me, the basic trick behind getting a brilliant shot is to learn to stay still. With or without the tripod. And the patience to click the same frame over and over and over again till you get it right!

It isn’t about how expensive, fancy or ‘Just out latest research based edition’ your equipment is. When I had set out to buy my equipment a friend warned me, ‘ Don’t go by what’s currently the newest model. Decide what you want from it.’ I realised I wanted to experiment with compositions, mostly the play of light and shade and colours. There’ll hardly be many instances when I’d go for high speed photography or sports photography. And of course, my equipment is so loaded with features already that it will be a real challenge to actually explore it to the max.

So in spite of comments like ‘ D3100 is by now an old model’ I am quite happy…..

This composition is from the garden in our apartment complex. I remember the day I had taken this shot. It was early winter. We in Delhi who go through a harsh summer wait eagerly for the very distinctive signs that it’s time now to take out our warm woollens. The pleasant sun, the early morning chill, the fuzzy warm afternoons and the seasonal winter flowers. All these before the fog and chill sets in and we can’t wait for spring to come!!

This was one of our early winter flowers. I had probably taken at least 20 shots before I settled on this. Not that it’s perfect. Just that by then my knees were aching and my back was sprained from leaning at impossible angles!!! And even the pleasant chill gets to your bones after you’re out there crouching over a flower bed for nearly three quarters of an hour!!

I imagine this picture is a fit enough subject for TINA’S meme Weekend flowers # 83.

Patience

“If I could store any character quality in a cookie jar, I’d store patience. Chocolate-chip patience cookies. And I’d eat them all at one sitting.”

My Size?

In about 4 month’s time, June 24th to be precise, I’ll have lived with my new family…err…make that FOREVER Family for FIVE years. I was four years old back when I’d come home to live with Ginger,Mummy and Daddy. Shadow of course, came much later. He’s just a puppy still, though he believes he is the leader of the pack!!

The point is, you’d think, by now Mummy would have known my size. Five years is a LOOOOng enough time, don’t you think?

Apparently NOT for her!

Perks of Winter

1.9 Degrees Centigrade at night and barely 6 Degrees for most parts of the day.  The icy winds from the Himalayas sweeping through the entire National Capital Region makes the ‘Feels Like’ temperature dip further down. There are just two ways to beat this cold. You either stay cooped up inside with the heating on or you get outside and RUN, RUN and RUN some more!

Trips to the park are delightful these days. For one, you get to make new friends because the human pups are all on winter vacation and seem to be spending all their waking hours playing in the park!

Two, Mummy is on a weight loss programme these days and doesn’t mind taking us out on longer walks.

In fact the way she has been making us run we suspect we are part of the programme too! Guess she has got it all mixed up. It was she who didn’t fit into her favourite pair of jeans and it was she who needed a new jacket because her warmest one was bursting at the seams!

WE are NOT fat! But if being a part of the programme means longer walks in the park, we aren’t complaining!

Chilled out Walkies!

Did you know? New Delhi recorded the coldest day in 44 years yesterday!! It was a chilling 6 degrees Centigrade almost the entire day. The Sun slept the day off which made things worse. It was a little better today as he (the Sun,we mean) reported back to work by late morning, albeit very unwillingly.

Tomorrow is set to be another chilly day. We must sleep off now and catch up on some sleep.

What with a bone chilling 4 degrees outside and almost semi-dark conditions, it is taking the three of us to drag Daddy out of bed for our morning walk.
